AI Dungeon relies on AI language models to drive game experiences. We also offer several AI image models to generate pictures during gameplay. Each of these models has been developed independently and has different characteristics.
In AI Dungeon, Premium models are available to all subscribers. These currently include Dragon, Mixtral, ChatGPT, and Stable Diffusion XL.
Subscribed players receive unlimited access to our Premium text models. Free players get daily actions from our Premium promo model (which is currently Mixtral).
Premium models are already speed-boosted, so it is not feasible to enable additional speed boosts with Scales for these models.
Dragon
Dragon uses a 17 billion parameter Jurassic-2 Mid model developed by AI21. It recognizes subjects and references that Basic models miss, and it does a better job recalling important story elements. Dragon is also capable of more complex writing styles, and its responses don’t require as many retries or edits.
Mixtral
Mixtral is a new model by Mistral AI that has already become the gold standard for most AI Dungeon players, with our last player survey showing that over 75% of responders prefer Mixtral over other Premium models. Mixtral is a 8x7B “mixture-of-experts” model with a total of 46.7B parameters. Industry benchmarks consistently rank Mixtral at or above models like Llama 70B or ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) but without ChatGPT’s moralizing tendencies around common adventure themes of violence or romance.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT (GPT-3.5) is a well-known large language model that is integrated to AI Dungeon. It performs extremely well in Adventures and has the potential to greatly improve areas where other models have struggled in the past, like memory, repetition, and creativity.
Microsoft is the only company besides OpenAI to have access to the ChatGPT model. We chose to host ChatGPT through Microsoft Azure for a few specific reasons, the most important being their privacy and security reputation. This is crucial to our players’ experiences in AI Dungeon, as well as to us.
Some players may wonder if Azure sends data to OpenAI and they do NOT. Microsoft hosts the OpenAI models within their own Azure infrastructure, and all customer data sent to Azure remains within the Azure service. This means that data processed by Azure is never sent to OpenAI. Microsoft runs ChatGPT on their own servers with strong security and privacy protections they’ve developed as part of the Azure stack.
Stable Diffusion XL
Stable Diffusion XL (SDXL) is our newest Premium image generation model. It is a dramatic improvement over Stable Diffusion 1.5 with higher resolution images in a broader range of visual styles, and with an improved focus on generating images beyond the abstract or dreamy-like. These generations cost 2 Credits for Adventurers and 1 Credit for Champions. SDXL images are unlimited for Legend and Mythic members.
